An overactive thyroid responds very well to diet improvements and supplements. Therefore, a person suffering from overactive thyroid must make correcting any nutritional deficiencies a point. Eating a diet very high in green and yellow vegetables, brown rice and other whole grains, sprouts, fruits and seafood, and avoiding certain foods helps a lot in fighting back the issue.
Avoid Dairy Products Like Milk, Yogurt & Cheese:
In some cases, people with hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) have been found showing inability to tolerate lactose. In other words, they bodies may experience problems in digesting milk products properly. After consuming milk-containing products like milk, cheese, yogurt, cheese or soups containing milk cream, they may start experiencing bloating, indigestion or fatigue. People suffering such problems should replace these dairy products with non-dairy equivalents such as soy-based products.
Avoid Added Sugars:
Added sugars, such as corn syrup, rice syrup, maltose, honey and cane sugar are high in sweetness and calories but low in dietary benefits. Foods and beverages like candies, milk chocolate, jams, jellies, sweetened coffee beverages and soft drinks are high in added sugars. A diet containing added sugars has less room for healthier foods. These added sugars may upset the levels of blood sugar in the body. People with overactive thyroid, thus, should avoid add sugars.
Avoid Refined Foods Like Enriched Bread & Pasta:
People with overactive thyroid should also avoid enriched flour. Enriched flour is prepared by grounding whole graining into a fine powder and stripping it of many nutrients and fiber-rich components. Thus, consuming eatables produced from enriched flour provides the body only with calorie and not essential nutrients. Thus if you are suffering from overactive thyroid, you should replace products like enriched bread and pasta with whole grains, fruits and green vegetables.
Avoid Alcoholic & Caffeinated Beverages:
Over consumption of alcoholic and caffeinated beverages disrupt energy levels and aggravates hyperthyroidism-linked symptoms such as anxiety, rapid heart beat and sleep disorder. Over use of alcohol and caffeine may also cause dehydration and loss of calcium, which alleviates risk of osteoporosis.
